Ice Cubes Raspberry Sorbet

Even setting aside the clever name, this is one cute gum.  Cube-shaped, soft and flecked with red, this selection from Hershey is unique in the world of chewables.

First chew reveals a nice sweet-and-sour berry flavor.  However, it quickly changes into a bright artificial flavoring note.  Worse, the berry flavor recedes much more quickly leaving nothing but a cloying trainwreck of bad taste.

Bubble blowing potential is moderate.

Prince of gums?  Sadly, no.

Extra Blueberry (Australia)

This is the second Extra gum Candybowl picked up on a recent visit to Australia.

The first impression is a punch in the mouth -- sour, a bit cloying.  Very intense berry-like flavor.  Is it blueberry?  Not really.  Is it good?  Yes.  Eventually the flavor recedes into a not-entirely-pleasant artificial sweetener mouth coating.

Bubble-blowing potential moderate.

A better showing from Extra.  But Candybowl knows they can do better.

Extra Bananaberry (Australia)

Fruitygum is not big fan of artificial banana flavor, so it is with some trepidation that this blog is begun with a banana-based gum.

The intitial flavor note is a pleasant sweet, not cloying flavor with only mild notes of banana and almost none of strawberry.  In fact, the taste is so mild that the waxiness of the gum base is present in the chew.

After chewing for a while, a small amount of menthol flavor seems to come through, but not enough to make this a "bananamint" gum.  The artificial banana lasts longer than the other flavors which, all things considered, is a good thing.

Bubble blowing potential is moderate.

In sum, not a strong showing from Wrigley Company Pty Ld.

Welcome

There are two kinds of gum chewers in this world:  those who think all gum must be minty, and those who realize that a good fruit-flavored gum is a wonderful thing.

Manufacturers get confused sometimes, and try to make fruity-minty gums.  Fruitygum (the blog) shall be as non-doctrinaire as possible, given the way certain people feel about fruit-mint as a gum concept.

One more thing -- manufacturers seem to understand that people who chew fruity gum like to blow bubbles.  So two gums in the same product line will have different textures based on the flavor -- fruity/bubble and minty/no-bubble.  Go figure.

Enjoy my blog.  Let me know how I'm doing by leaving a comment, if you're so inclined.  Otherwise, just sit back and enjoy the ride.
